How daily rankings work

Your first daily game of each kind counts. A replay never replaces it. Players are ranked by score, and an equal score goes to the faster time. Time is measured by our server: from the moment a game’s first question appears to the moment the finished game arrives. Leaving the page doesn’t pause it. City Limits adds up the times of its three cities, not the time between them.

Each day closes at midnight Eastern Time (New York) and its standings are frozen. Players who keep their username private still hold their place, as hidden players. Guests take places too, as GeoAnon1, GeoAnon2 and so on, numbered in the order they first finished a game that day. A guest sees their own place, and signing in that day moves the game to your name. Only one guest per network counts in each game: a second guest’s game is told where it would stand, but takes no place. A guest’s game opens from its GeoAnon name, as a public player’s does.

When a day closes, the top eight signed-in players in each game win a medal: gold, silver, bronze, copper, tin, plastic, cardboard and a damp napkin, as long as at least two signed-in players finished. Guests hold their place but take no medal, and push nobody out of the medals: 30th place wins tin if only four signed-in players finished ahead of it. Medals add up over time, and each player’s count for that game shows next to their name.

Scores come from games played in your browser. They are checked for valid ranges and duplicates, but they are not cheat-proof, so these rankings are casual.
